To Launch First North American Large-Scale IPv6 Service
[25th June 2003]
SAN DIEGO, Jun 25, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE)
-- Verio, a subsidiary of NTT Communications (NTT Com)
and a leader in global IP solutions, today announced
it will be the first Internet service provider in the
United States to deliver large-scale connectivity in
North America of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6),
the next generation communication platform for Internet
data traffic. The pre-commercial service is available
immediately.
In anticipation of launching the commercial
service at the end of this year, Verio is now offering
customers the opportunity to participate in a pre-commercial
service of IPv6, which offers a number of benefits over
the current IPv4 standard. NTT Communications and Verio
envision IPv4/IPv6 dual stack service delivery on the
NTT/VERIO Global IP Network during the companies' commercial
launch scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2003.
Yukimasa Ito, president of the Global
IP Network unit of Verio, said that IPv6 offers users
improved performance, manageability, scalability and
data protection.
"IPv6 has historically had a higher
profile in Europe and Asia, where the shortage of available
Global IP addresses has been limiting the flexibility
in configuring corporate networks as well as implementing
home appliance networks," he said. "IPv6 is
resolving this issue of overcrowding, and customers
overseas are finding that it also offers other benefits
like automatic configuration of IP addresses, and security.
As Internet-enabled mobile devices and home appliances
continue to grow in popularity in the United States,
we will provide IPv6 service to give our customers a
better way to send data over the Internet, regardless
of whether they are using a high-performance network
like Ethernet or a low-bandwidth wireless solution."
Verio is making pre-commercial IPv6
available now to customers in the San Francisco Bay
Area, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. through IPv6 native
service, while pre-commercial IPv6 tunneling service
is available for those customers who subscribe to Verio's
conventional IPv4 services anywhere in the United States.
"The Internet2 community is actively
deploying IPv6 on campus, regional and backbone networks,
and has demonstrated its ability to support scalable
end-to-end transparency and global addressability required
by advanced network applications," said Guy Almes,
chief engineer for Internet2, a consortium led by 202
universities working in partnership with industry and
government to develop and deploy advanced network applications
and technologies. "The availability of commercial
IPv6 services will be critical in sustaining the scalable
growth and innovation that has distinguished the Internet's
development over the past 30 years."
In related news, visitors to the North
American IPv6 Global Summit in San Diego this week will
be among the first to see the new protocol in action,
as Verio is the official provider of IPv6 connectivity
to the Summit, and will demonstrate the technology's
application.
Summit Chairman Alex Lightman echoed
that IPv6 is a significant step forward from the 30-year-old
IPv4 standard and will be essential for new technology
like fourth generation cellular networks.
"By supplying IPv6 service to this
year's Summit, Verio is giving us a glimpse of the future
of communications," he said. "Verio's plan
to deliver IPv6 on a broad scale is a cornerstone of
our conviction that the protocol will make great strides
in the next year, particularly since conference attendance
indicates the strong support IPv6 has from both the
industry and government sectors."
In fact, the Department of Defense recently
announced it will implement IPv6 to "facilitate
integration of the essential elements of DoD's Global
Information Grid--its sensors, weapons, platforms, information
and people." The announcement points out that IPv6
can overcome net-centric operations by expanding available
IP address space, improving security, facilitating mobile
communications, and easing system management burdens.
NTT Com, Verio's parent company, is
supporting the Verio IPv6 initiative on its NTT/VERIO
Global IPv6 backbone network, which is already delivering
commercial service in many countries in Asia-Pacific,
including Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong,
and Australia, as well as Europe, including Great Britain,
the Netherlands, France, Germany and Spain. NTT Com
is the only commercial provider in the world to offer
such large global coverage of IPv6 service. NTT Com
pioneered IPv6 development, and since 1996, has led
the way in researching and standardizing the protocol.
NTT Communications has approximately 500 IPv6 customers
around the world.
In 2002, NTT Com's ongoing commitment
to IPv6 was formally recognized when the company received
the prestigious World Communications Award for Best
Technology Foresight for its IPv6 initiative.
