Virtual Private Server Hosting Solution Delivers Unmatched
Combination of 'Fair Share' Resource Management, Root
Access and Open Architecture [16th June 2003]
Verio, a subsidiary of NTT Communications
and a leader in global IP solutions, today announced
the launch of its NTT/VERIO Virtual Private Server Version
2 (VPS v2). The new offering, launched under the Small
to Medium Enterprise (SME) Hosting unit's family of
products, gives businesses a unique combination of technology
and performance in a managed Virtual Private Server
hosting solution.
The NTT/VERIO VPS v2 answers a strong
industry demand for the next generation of Virtual Private
Server solutions that deliver three key elements to
the small to medium market, especially reseller partners
serving this market through the viaVerio channel program:
-- 1. The solution utilizes fair share
technology for resource
management. This enhanced partitioning technology ensures
the
availability of resources and performance, regardless
of
activities of other VPS customers, through the guaranteed
allocation of server space, processes, memory, CPU and
network. This partitioning also provides one of the
best
available defenses against security breaches for customers.
-- 2. Root access allows for full control
of the VPS, like that
in a dedicated hosting environment but at a fraction
of the
cost. These root access features allow users to control
all
VPS resources including access to file systems, configuration
files, system libraries, root files and application
installations.
-- 3. The NTT/VERIO advanced VPS solution
is built on an open
architecture platform, giving reseller partners and
end users
more flexibility than other VPS offerings and improving
compatibility and integration with other systems and
applications. Based on the industry-standard UNIX platform
and
the FreeBSD operating system, and with the ability to
run many
Linux applications in Linux emulation, the NTT/VERIO
VPS v2
enables increased use of off-the-shelf applications,
and
enhances total cost of ownership by extending the lifetime
of
applications. This VPS v2 environment enables companies
to
build and deploy an array of their desired applications,
including e-commerce, multimedia solutions and database
applications.
This flexibility, coupled with Verio's breadth of managed
services, makes VPS v2 attractive to SMEs who need a
more powerful and economical solution, but may not have
the internal resources to manage it themselves. With
the offering, the NTT/VERIO VPS v2 can serve a range
of businesses' needs such as supporting a corporate
intranet, custom application development and hosting,
web-based calendaring, e-mail management and data management,
and many additional possibilities.
"As the company that introduced
Virtual Private Server technology to the marketplace,
Verio has put focused manpower behind this new offering
to the small to medium business community and especially
reseller partners serving this market," said Doug
Schneider, president of SME Hosting for Verio. "Our
new VPS product is an integral part of our offerings
for small and medium enterprises as we continue to develop
more solutions to answer customers' needs to make their
jobs easier. The new capabilities help SME customers
maximize their Web presence and build their business
online."
SME Chief Web Architect Stacey Son,
who invented the Virtual Private Server product at his
company iServer, which was later acquired by Verio,
noted that the new VPS is a significant expansion of
the original VPS product. "We designed this product
to enable extensive customization, and this, along with
the full access, control, security and flexibility,
provides critical benefits to users," he said.
"The functionality of the VPS can readily be extended
as businesses grow, and can be as basic or complex as
the administrator needs it to be."
For Verio's SME reseller partners, the
solution offers significantly enhanced revenue generation
opportunities. viaVerio resellers can now offer new
and improved Web services and applications at a reduced
cost per hosting solution. Resellers have indicated
they particularly like the fact they can offer new applications
based on the open architecture standards, and that they
have the ability to create multiple users, support sub-hosting
and multiple shell accounts.
In early offerings to partners, more
than 600 SME reseller accounts have been activated with
the new VPS v2 offering. "As our customers outgrow
their current Web infrastructures, they need the kind
of Virtual Private Server solution that Verio now offers
with VPS v2. The combination of root access and the
fair share server resource allocation gives our customers
a more complete VPS solution," said Mark Sharkey,
founder of Precision Pros, a Verio SME reseller partner.
"We currently manage more than 100 virtual private
servers and are excited to transition at least 80 percent
of those to the new VPS v2 platform. I'm confident that
we'll continue to increase our customer base with this
new offering."
Pricing and Availability:
The new NTT/VERIO VPS v2 is available
immediately to both the reseller and retail channels.
Three product plans are offered: VPS v2 Standard, Pro
and Pro Plus, with a retail price starting at $149.95
and significant discounts to viaVerio reseller partners.

Background on Virtual Private Server
Technology
NTT/VERIO VPS is a revolutionary, fully
managed hosting environment that gives customers their
own UNIX virtual machine. Each VPS is a private and
protected area that operates as an independent server.
The VPS allows multiple customers to share the expense
of hardware and network connections, without sacrificing
performance or choice. Each single physical server is
constructed so that although multiple customers share
hardware, every VPS has its own complete directory structure
and set of dedicated applications, such as Web server
and mail server applications. Even though hardware is
shared, the NTT/VERIO VPS v2 technology features 'fair
share' scheduling of processes, memory and network,
so each VPS receives guaranteed resources for security
and performance demands.
