Mailblocks Mourns Loss of Founder, Phil Goldman [28th December 2003]

LOS ALTOS, CALIFORNIA–December 28, 2003–Mailblocks, Inc., a consumer Webmail provider, today announced with great sorrow the unexpected death of colleague and friend, CEO Phil Goldman. He was 39 years old.

Phil was a technology visionary, entrepreneur and prolific inventor. His passion was simplifying technology and making it useful for consumers. This was the focus of his career at Apple Computer, General Magic, WebTV Networks, Microsoft, and most recently Mailblocks.

“Phil was one of the brightest stars to ever shine over Silicon Valley. A world-class technologist and entrepreneur and a mentor to many, Phil was respected not only for his brilliance and creativity, but for his character, integrity and untiring spirit. It is an honor to have known Phil Goldman,’’ said Steve Perlman, a long-time friend and colleague.

“Phil was a revered leader—many employees had the good fortune to work for him at more than one of his companies,” said Susan Bratton, VP Sales and Marketing at Mailblocks. “His approach to business was an intelligent balance of foresight and risk-taking that brought a tremendous amount of respect from his employees, his vendors and his customers. Phil will be deeply missed.”

Mailblocks will continue operations, led by the strong executive management team of Bratton, Vice President of Engineering Rich Landsman and Vice President of Technical Operations Phil Steffora. Toward fulfillment of Phil’s vision, the company plans to continue with its release of a new version of the Mailblocks service.

Before founding Mailblocks, Phil spent more than 20 years in technology and consumer service development. Most recently he served as Vice President of Advanced TV Services at Microsoft. He was a founder of WebTV Networks. Before WebTV, Phil served as Director of Communication Products at General Magic and did groundbreaking work to modernize the Mac OS at Apple Computer.

Phil was a highly productive and recognized inventor with 19 U.S. Patents issued and many more pending. A graduate of Princeton University, Phil graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and was honored as the top student in the School of Engineering. He served as the chair of the university’s Computer Science department advisory council. He also served on the board of directors of BraveKids, a charitable organization using computers and the Internet to aid the families of children with chronic or life threatening illnesses.

Phil resided in Los Altos Hills, Calif., and is survived by his wife, Susan, and two children, as well as his parents, and two brothers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to BraveKids at http://www.bravekids.org.
