Statement on FCC VoIP 911 Ruling [May 19, 2005]
ATLANTA,
May 19, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- The
following statement is in response to today's vote by
the Federal Communications Commission requiring Voice
Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers to support E-911
services, and is attributable to Dave Baker, EarthLink
(ELNK), vice president of law and public policy.
EarthLink and other VoIP providers are
committed to providing 911 services. We therefore support
FCC and Congressional efforts to ensure public safety
by requiring that VoIP subscribers have prompt access
to E-911.
"In order to meet this objective,
the FCC must ensure that incumbent phone companies provide
access to the interfaces needed to deliver and complete
E-911 calls.
"We look forward to working with
the FCC to ensure that the promise of VoIP and the safety
of consumers are realized together."
