Verio
Readies For Hurricane Ivan With Emergency Preparedness
And Business Continuity Planning []
Similar Planning Helped to Ensure Normal Operations
for Customers throughout Hurricane Frances
Englewood, Colo., September 10, 2004
- Verio, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT Communications
and leader in global IP solutions, is implementing emergency
preparedness and business continuity planning as it
continues to monitor the course of the hurricane.
Verio's facilities, including its data
center in Boca Raton, Florida, will be monitored on
a 24 hour basis, to help ensure uninterrupted business
operations for customers. The Florida data center is
housed in a Category 5 rated building designed to withstand
significant weather occurrences such as hurricanes.
The facility has fully redundant power systems to ensure
continuous power capabilities for an extended period.
Additionally, backup generators are serviced through
multiple priority contracts in the event refueling is
required.
Verio is also communicating ongoing
updates on the current hurricane situation it is monitoring,
and the steps it is taking in critical areas to maintain
normal business operations.
During the recent Hurricane Frances,
Verio recorded no outages to data center service, nor
any unusual spikes or slowdowns in data center performance.
The company's emergency response team implemented a
full-scale Emergency Preparedness Plan, outlining all
possible situations due to the uncertain behavior of
the hurricane, and closely monitoring the situation
prior to and throughout the storm.
Verio worked closely with its customers
to ensure their business recovery plans were in place
and to address any outstanding preparation issues both
in advance and throughout the hurricane's sweep across
the state of Florida. Although the South Florida area
suffered power outages, none of the information systems
hosted on customers' behalf in Verio's data center suffered
any interruption of service.
“We are committed to ensuring
minimal impact to our customers' service, whether they
are affected by natural occurrences or other emergency
situations,” said Randy Laminack, vice president
of data center operations for Verio. “During Hurricane
Frances, our staff worked around the clock to ensure
all business operations were maintained. As we now monitor
the path of Hurricane Ivan, we will make certain that
our disaster recovery and business continuity planning
is fully maintained and accessible to all our customers.”
Customer support operations will also
continue their normal 24/7 staffing, with contingency
plans in place as needed.
Verio's network infrastructure servicing
the facility also employs redundant monitoring and systems.
Preparations for uninterrupted connectivity during traumatic
on-site conditions include redundant circuits with diverse
logical and physical paths into the data center. These
circuits are monitored for performance and uptime, with
support and fail-over capabilities from remote monitoring
teams across the country. Verio's goal is to maintain
normal service levels regardless of conditions in a
particular site, by maintaining redundant facilities
in geographically dispersed locations, and implementing
appropriate preparedness plans.
