PRIMUS Telecommunications Selects Veraz Softswitch/Gateway for its NGN Network Migration [March 8, 2004]

SAN JOSE, Calif., Mar 8, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Veraz Networks announced that PRIMUS Telecommunications, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of PRIMUS Telecommunications Group, Incorporated (PRTL) , has selected Veraz's ControlSwitch softswitch and the I-Gate 4000 PRO media gateways as part of PRIMUS's strategic plan in the USA to migrate to a service-rich, next-generation network and replace traditional Class 4 toll tandem switch installations. This full service, next-generation network will offer both traditional PSTN and VoIP services to PRIMUS's consumer and business customers, as well as a global peering solution and wholesale services to other carriers.

Initially, the Veraz solution will start with a port deployment replacing an existing central office architecture. Demonstrating the cost-effectiveness of a circuit-to-packet migration for VoIP services, this new deployment enables PRIMUS to take advantage of the significant port and space density that is integral to the Veraz design. With less equipment to maintain, power, and cool, PRIMUS will experience a significant reduction in OPEX and CAPEX-related costs. The I-Gate 4000 PRO provides PRIMUS with Veraz's leading DSP technology offering the industry's highest compression capability while providing independently tested world-class voice quality.

The Veraz solution incorporates its previously announced Global Peering Solution capabilities to also integrate the functionality of PRIMUS's existing VoIP Gateway infrastructure. As a leading global VoIP provider, PRIMUS requires the flexibility for interconnecting their existing global VoIP network, which currently includes connections to over 130 countries and over 550 VOIP POPs. With support for international interfaces like global SS7 variants, STM-1 interfaces, H.323 origination, termination, OSP and SIP, Veraz's flexible architecture meets PRIMUS's needs and allows them to expand their next-gen deployment with superior returns on investment over traditional Class 4 switches and early next-generation VoIP solutions architected along the lines of TDM switches.

PRIMUS's network migration plans call for subsequent legacy TDM switch replacements in a variety of its central office locations to further reduce operational expenses as well as migrate to highly advanced next generation packet-based network services enabled through Veraz's Services Introduction Framework.

Veraz's Service Introduction Framework provides the routing flexibility and multi-protocol support to significantly speed up the development and deployment cycle for new service capabilities, such as global peering support via both H.323 and SIP and clearinghouse support via OSP, important to PRIMUS customers. With the architectural flexibility of the ControlSwitch, PRIMUS gains a competitive advantage over other providers, helping PRIMUS to grow its global customer base, while contributing to profit margins. Additionally, the Veraz softswitch offers central management from a single location anywhere in the world for both VoIP and TDM network services, thus simplifying network management.

"We looked for the best VoIP infrastructure solution that could provide immediate ROI benefits, while delivering a future-proof plan that includes flexibility to grow our network and allow accelerated service development and activation with superior options for future technology convergence efforts," said Geoffrey K. Hicks, Senior VP of Network Services & Engineering at PRIMUS Telecommunications, Inc. "Veraz offered us the most compelling solution on the market today that will provide us with a competitive edge, help us reduce operating costs and capital expenditures, while further leveraging PRIMUS's existing expertise in the VoIP marketplace. This relationship will further contribute to the continued deployment of our next generation VoIP/SIP consumer and business customer product portfolio while enhancing the company's ability to provide improved levels of service that our existing customer base has come to expect."

"As PRIMUS aggressively moves forward into new markets and attracts new users, Veraz's ControlSwitch and media gateways will help PRIMUS to service its long distance traffic and VoIP services most effectively," said Tal Simchony, CEO, Veraz Networks. "We are very pleased to be selected to help PRIMUS with one of the most significant global network migration opportunities."
