Hostway,
Mayor's Council of Technology Advisors Kick-off Second
Annual Chicagoland Web Designers of the Future Contest
[March 3, 2004]
CHICAGO, Mar 3, 2004 /PRNewswire via
COMTEX/ -- Underscoring the creativity and technical
sophistication of local area high school students, Hostway(R)
Corporation, a leading provider of Internet hosting
and other managed services, has once again joined with
Mayor Richard M. Daley's Council of Technology Advisors
(MCTA) to sponsor a talent search for the area's most
promising young Web designers.
The second annual Chicagoland Web Designers
of the Future Contest is open to students at all of
the area's public and private high schools. Students
may submit Web sites they have designed individually,
in teams or as class projects. Prizes include a total
of $5,000 in scholarships. Students may submit entries
until May 1. Winners will be selected by June 1.
The contest is designed to showcase
the talents of Chicago area high school students, including
both self-taught designers and those who have taken
advantage of formal Web design courses available through
their high schools. Students will compete on the basis
of content, structure and navigation, visual design,
functionality and success of their sites. Web sites
designed for personal or commercial use can be submitted
and this year Hostway is establishing a new category
for Web sites created especially for the contest reflecting
the theme "Teenagers and Technology".
Students wishing to enter their Web
site designs in the contest may do so online at http://www.hostway.com/highschool/
. There will be two grand prize winners; one in the
open category and one in the themed category. Each will
receive a $2,500 scholarship while runner-up entries
will receive an offer of free hosting from Hostway valued
at over $250. Official rules can be found online.
Hostway has assembled a distinguished
panel of judges for its Web Designers of the Future
Contest, including Christopher O'Brien, chief information
officer for the City of Chicago and co-chairman of Mayor
Richard M. Daley's Council of Technology Advisors; Candy
Renwall, executive director of the Chicago Software
Association; Michael Lach, director of science for Chicago
Public Schools; and Lucas Roh, president and Chief Executive
Officer of Hostway Corporation.
"We're convinced that some of the
best young Web designers in the country reside in the
Chicago area," said Lucas Roh, Hostway's CEO. "Hostway
is proud to join the Mayor's Council of Technology Advisors
in providing an opportunity to bring to light some of
this local talent and supports the personal and professional
development of young students who are considering Internet-
related careers."
Last year Ian Melnick, 17, a senior
at Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center, was the
unanimous top choice of contest judges for creating
his school's official Web site. Joining Melnick were
a trio of students from Whitney Young Magnet School,
Steve Granda, Richard Otap and Stan Lipski, who took
second place for their school-community site. Third
prize went to Thomas Wolfe, a senior at Brother Rice
Catholic High School, for his personal site, Blackphiber.
"One of the best things about winning
the Hostway contest was the official recognition that
the Web site I created was useful and well-designed
by the Mayor's Council of Technology Advisors, the Chicago
Public School System and the Chicagoland business community,"
said Melnick. "It also boosted the site's popularity
within the school, prompting people to make better use
of all the things it can do."
