I Host's Wi-Fi Guy Testdrives Wireless Access at Sundance
Film Festival, Prepares for Cross-Country Roadtrip
[Jan 19, 2004]
PARK CITY, Utah, Jan 19, 2004 /PRNewswire
via COMTEX/ -- C I Host today began the "beta test"
of the "Wi-Fi Guy" roadtrip at the 2004 Sundance
Film Festival in Park City, Utah. After the test run
at Sundance, the Wi-Fi Guy will cross America "seeking
out all things wireless" -- connecting, networking,
hooking up -- and reporting from the road.
"We sponsored the Wi-Fi Guy because
C I Host has a history of progressive marketing,"
said Christopher Faulkner, CEO of C I Host. "Wi-Fi
is the most liberating business tool since the laptop.
So we want to help point out the hot beds of wireless
activity, spread the word and recruit more disciples."
The Wi-Fi Guy, a journalist and published
author, said, "Sundance is the place to reach opinion
leaders, celebrities and early adopters -- and this
year, there is a huge Wi-Fi presence, compliments of
Starbucks Coffee Company, HP and T-Mobile, USA."
Ironically, the idea for the Wi-Fi Guy
tour was conceived at a Starbucks coffee shop, when
passersby repeatedly asked the writer about his wireless
connection -- consisting of an HP laptop and a T-Mobile
Hotspot connection. (C I Host threw in unlimited use
of a 2004 Ford Expedition -- boldly wrapped in C I Host's
trademark orange and blue.)
"It's cool and productive, but
many people know nothing of Wi-Fi," said the Wi-Fi
Guy. "So, we discussed the idea at C I Host and
... 'Roadtrip!'"
Wi-Fi is a local area network (LAN)
that communicates via radio waves on the 802.11 communications
standard instead of wires. Hotspots are available throughout
the United States in coffee shops, airports, copy service
centers and even churches enabling users to access the
Internet.
The annual Sundance Film Festival, a
major program of Sundance Institute, is held each January
and is considered the premier showcase for American
and international independent film.
