over euro2000.com
Englewood, Colo., August 13, 2004 -
Verio, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT Communications
and Official IT Partner for the UEFA EURO 2004™
tournament, today released online traffic figures for
the euro2004.com website. Throughout the tournament,
the euro2004.com website received a total of more than
40 million online visits, showcasing a dramatic rise
in interest for online sporting sites.
By comparison, the 2000 Sydney Summer
Olympic Games website received 8.7 million unique visitors(1).
Verio also announced that, during the
UEFA EURO 2004™ tournament, which concluded in
July 2004, the website saw a 350 percent increase of
page views on the EURO 2000™ tournament(2).
During the tournament's 31 matches,
online visitors spanning 230 countries accessed the
euro2004.com website for exclusive content and live
interaction among other web activities. North American
visitors made up 20 percent of the site's traffic, with
45 percent from Europe and 27 percent from Asia. This
global community of football fans was able to access
tournament data 24x7 using the NTT Communications global
network of network caching and data centers worldwide
which meant the site delivered flawless performance
to users throughout the event and especially to the
high volumes of visitors during key games.
“We were delighted to demonstrate
on a global stage how well Verio's hosting solutions
and infrastructure technologies cope with the demands
of an international sports tournament such as UEFA EURO
2004™ with unprecedented levels of online users,”
said Moos Bulder, president, Verio Europe.
“UEFA used the entire network
of Verio data centers in key markets and delivered an
array of sophisticated media content to their worldwide
user base.”
One of the most in-demand features was
the live match console called 'MatchCentre'. Through
this application, fans had access to live content including
text commentary, real-time statistics and photos - a
first for this year's tournament. MatchCentre was responsible
for the site's highest peak in bandwidth during the
Portugal vs. England quarter-final on 24 June, when
28 million page views were recorded and traffic volume
peaked at 2.82 terabytes. Verio was able to deliver
content in real time via its global Smart Content Delivery
(SCD) network.
