Verio,
in Partnership with ATS, to Provide Managed Hosting
Solution to U.S. Law Library of Congress Global Legal
Information Network [August 4, 2004]
MCLEAN,
Va., and ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Aug 4, 2004 /PRNewswire via
COMTEX/ -- Verio, a subsidiary of NTT Communications
and a leading global IP solutions provider, announced
today that the General Services Administration for the
U.S. Law Library of Congress has selected the company
to host the Global Legal Information Network (GLIN).
The GLIN Web site will contain a multilingual database
of laws, judicial decisions, legal writings and legislative
records from countries in the Americas, Europe, Africa
and Asia. Verio's selection was part of a larger, $5.7M
contract awarded to Advanced Technology Systems, Inc.
(ATS).
The Law Library of Congress initially
created GLIN to support its research and reference services
and to increase digital access to its collection of
legal resources. In response to an increased demand
for online international legal research resources, Verio
and ATS were awarded this contract to expand the existing
GLIN system. Specifically, Verio will provide managed
hosting, storage and security services giving the Law
Library of Congress a highly available and secure infrastructure
for its GLIN project.
"The U.S. Law Library of Congress
is the largest and most complete law library, accessed
and used by legal researchers around the world. Together
with Verio, ATS will continue to build upon this world-class
information system to advance global legal research,"
said Pete Spewak, senior vice president at ATS.
Under the larger contract umbrella,
other enhancements and upgrades will include designated
areas to upload documents such as court decisions and
legislative records, improvements to user interfaces
and expanded multilingual features to support approximately
20 different languages. When the upgrades are complete,
GLIN will support customized search agents, topic-based
user subscriptions and role based user administration.
"As the Internet has evolved to
include interactive applications, like VOIP and streaming
video, more government agencies are looking to refresh
their online presence with new Web tools," said
James Treuting, president of global sales for Verio.
"The U.S. Library of Congress' information network
is a perfect example of the proactive measures taken
by the public sector to establish a dynamic virtual
knowledge center for employees and constituents. Verio
is pleased to support GLIN, and we look forward to incorporating
a variety of resource tools that will elevate its usage
capabilities."
The mission of the Law Library of Congress
is to provide research and legal information to Congress,
the federal courts and executive branch agencies and
to offer reference services to the public. Nearly 50
jurisdictions currently contribute legal documents to
GLIN.
